Tennessee Delta Force explodes onto Youth Football, Cheer and Dance Scene!

A new concept to Tri-Cities youth football has been launched! Tennessee Delta Force offers competitive, light travel youth football, cheer and dance targeting boys and girls ages 7-12.

The Program will consist of four teams of 25 players each defined in age groups of 7-9

and 10-12. The four teams will compete in competitive full contact games and tournaments in the East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia region. Six position specific

clinics/camps have been held since March 1st and evaluation and selection of players and teams set for late June.

The Program stemmed from the passion of local leaders determined to deliver top shelf football, cheer and dance resources to area youth.  Program Director, Mark Page states “the name Tennessee Delta Force delivers on the spirit of The Program. Tennessee capturing the state name and Delta meaning change and elite.” Page goes on to say that the name also honors those who bravely serve our country in the military.

The platform of elite resources training competitive youth as well as practicing and playing against a peer group will dramatically accelerate the skill sets.

The Tennessee Delta Force continues with its series of clinics on Monday at J. Fred Johnson Stadium in Kingsport leading up to the formation of four Tri-Cities based travel football teams.

All 6-12 year old boys interested in football and now girls interested in cheerleading or dancing are encouraged to attend the free clinic.

The Tennessee Delta Force was formed earlier this year under the direction of Kingsport resident Mark Page, strategically designed to aggregate both the talented and eager youth football player. Programs for girls interested in cheerleading or dance, are also now available.

“I ran a beta test in the community to see if there was any interest in a travel football program and it was overwhelming,” said Page. Included in the beta testing were Science Hill head football coach Stacy Carter and Dr. Jim Phillips, whose sons Curt and Clint played for Carter at Sullivan South.

“Dr. Phillips grilled me for about 45 minutes on the merits of the program and whether we had the right goals in mind regarding participation,” continued Page. “After hearing the presentation and answers to their questions, both pledged their immediate support.”

Carter was instrumental during a recent camp held at Science Hill while Dr. Phillips has assisted with camps at Sullivan South.

Carter and Phillips are just two of an impressive list of advisors to help with the program.

“This program will be successful because of all the people that have come together,” said Page of his board that includes the likes of Sullivan North head coach Robbie Norris, Super Bowl Champion Carroll Dale and Dobyns-Bennett head coach Graham Clark. “They are good leaders, good men and good with kids.”

The camp Monday at Dobyns-Bennett is the second involving Clark.

“Our area is a little behind regarding programs like this,” said Clark. “Anytime kids are playing football, I’m for it. I just like coming down and watching the kids work. It helps promote interest in the game and gives youngsters a chance to compete at a high level.”

According to Page, the kids will compete at a high level due to some specific platforms within the program.

“We have position specific coaches at the clinics,” said Page. “Plus we have Scott Held from Med-Tech working with the kids on speed, quickness and agility.”

Also part of the clinics is an on-site medical staff to assist with any health issues. Dr. Eric Parks of Watauga Orthopaedics has been engaged at most every clinic to date.

All the camps to date will lead to the formation of four different teams for two different leagues advised Page. An ‘A’ team and a ‘B’ team for two leagues ages 7-9 and 10-12 will be formed and will play teams from locales such as Abingdon, Greeneville and Morristown.

“It’s definitely competitive and light travel,” explained Page. “We will travel as far as Knoxville and Southwest Virginia for a pre-season tournament, a ten-game regular season and a post-season tournament.”

Page added that although several clinics have already been conducted, opportunities are still available for kids with a passion for football. Kids from 13 different local communities are already involved with the Tennessee Delta Force and Page is looking for more.

“The kid has to have a passion for football, that's the first requirement,” explained Page. “The second is that we want to make sure parents are engaged and understand what we are doing and are comfortable with it. We’re looking for good kids and good families.”

Around 100 players will eventually be a part of the four Tennessee Delta Force squads. The player evaluation and team selection for those teams is likely to come later this month or early in July. Games will be played in high school stadiums on Saturdays.

Page says one of the most common questions asked about the program is cost. All the clinics are free with each position on the four teams coming with a maximum $100 fee.

“We’ll hand the family a uniform,” Page added, “and practice two-three times per week depending on how well team is doing and on injuries.”

Campers not chosen won’t go away empty-handed. Those not chosen will be provided with a takeway sheet with opportunities for improvement as well as pointers on fundamentals where they are already strong.

Those kids will also be directed to a league where they can work to improve those skis.

“Those kids not on a Tennessee Delta Force team will be pipelined back to their community leagues,” said Page. “The last thing we want to do is disrupt the county leagues or boys’ club leagues."

Page said that while football is the premise of the program, he expects the kids to gain much more.

“It’s a process, it’s not just football,” noted Page. “While we have a particular passion for football, we have also have the ability to deliver through a platform called football a good time and a good message.”

The clinic Monday at Dobyns-Bennett is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
